Value of Preservation
Cost:
The cost for monitoring and saving the Andean cat is high because of its high-altitutde environment and other factors. There have not been many studies or observations that have been done on the Andean cat so it takes more effort and money to start and maintain the research and its conservation service. Approximately $10,000 will be spent annually for the Andean Cat Conservation and Monitoring Center. Over $107,000 was spent to establish the Andean Cat Center (Jackson).
Benefits:
-Why should we save andean cats?
The Andean cat is seen as "the soul of the Andes." It is an important cultural and ethnic figure of the Andes (The Soul of the Andes). Saving the andean cat is crucial to the local communities. On a global scale, it contributes to the species diversity. As one of the rarest cats in the world, the Andean cat is a valuable species for scientists to study.
- Why should we save endangered species?
The big idea is to protect biodiversity, which can essentially help humans in several ways. Species diversity gives us opportunities in science advancement, such as medicine ("Endangered Species"). For example, Houston toad, which is an endangered species found in southeast Texas, produces special chemicals to protect itself from predators. These chemicals could be made into medicine to treat heart diseases ("Why Care"). It also benefits us in some other ways, including purifying fresh water and air, alleviating poverty, reducing carbon, etc.. In addition to these benefits, we can have more species on the earth to make the planet more beautiful. Also on a moral level, saving endangered species is simply the right thing to do. Animals have the rights to live and as a part of the planet, we human have the obligation to save endangered species.
